It wasn't until I did a search for "Center Console" that I realized something pretty obvious: outside of the boating bubble, this phrase means the auto part (whether standard or aftermarket) that sits between the driver's and passenger seats.

Thankfullly, unlike some boating terms, it doesn't mean something totally different away from boats.  Because center console boats are named after the, uh, console in the center of the deck area. And even though it's usually more in front than in between the seats, it's easy to see the correlation between the two.

This center console is obviously rigged to fish, but the design is great for countless other uses too.

Understanding where the name comes from is just a start to understanding the advantages of this type of boat, which has developed into one of the versatile options for today's boating family. Ranging in length from 16 to 30-plus feet, center consoles (or CCs) can be used for every kind of on the water fun: fishing, coving, harbor touring, towing, getting somewhere fast—you name it. With so much open space, you can decide how you'll use it.

Almost all models are outboard-powered, with larger boats sporting double, triple, and even quad outboards. Modern CCs can be quite well fitted-out, with comfortable seating just forward of the console (and often also a bench seat in the stern). Some have the option of turning the bow area into a sunpad or eating area, or both. Add a T-top to the console, and you even get some shade.

The space under the console has also been put to use in recent designs; manufacturers have added storage, heads, and on some larger boats, even a full cabin. (Here's one example: Deep Impact 399 Cabin Center Console: It Will Wow You)

There's an incredible range of center console boats available, new and used. And because they are fairly simple and easy to repower, you might even find one for less than you think... though it will probably still cost you a little more than one of those aftermarket center consoles that are available for your car or truck.
